Toll The Bells
The source of the study of Natural Law and the Gnostic Revolution, for nearly a century Avernus has been the accepted centre of learning and reason in the known world. This has led to a larger than usual number of colleges, universities, publishers, magewrights, and other things related to intellectual pursuits.
The rise of intellectualism and the success of their military expansion has created a sort of wealthier lifestyle in Avernus than in other regions. The average income is higher, houses are larger, cities more developed and more decorated, and more amenities are available. This is only made possible by the large amount of resources imported from other regions, as more and more of the native population shifts away from forges and mills and towards counting houses and publishing.
For the most part Avernus no longer exports much, but still prosper due to the regions under their heel, and due to the high demand for what they do make. That being ideas rather than goods, numerous outsiders flock to their centres of learning, pay huge sums for training in construction or design of magical artifacts, or in the new art of airship building.
Most of the industry that does remain is centered in the massive shipyards that are running round the clock turning out warship after warship at a staggering pace. These shipyards are easily the largest in the known world by several factors of magnitude. This is easily understandable due to the fact that the concept was conceived and executed there, and has been the reason for their meteoric rise.
Avernus is in theory a republic, but the Emperor has final say in all matters of importance, and the senate exists mainly to lend validity to his reign, and to help govern the nations day to day matters.
